Chinese telecom giant Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. has partnered with South Korean telecom companies SK Telecom Co. Ltd., KT Corporation and LG Uplus Corp. to establish fifth-generation (5G) networks.

Huawei announced it will work closely with the three service providers on 5G networking technologies but has yet to decide whether it will open a new research and development center in South Korea.

"Though it is in its early stage, we are considering the possibility of building R&D centre in South Korea," said Sanqi Li, Huawei's CTO of products and solutions, during the Startup Nations Summit 2014 held in Seoul.

Li said Huawei had already discussed with the South Korean telecom companies the future of 5G networking technologies, research and development, and the Internet of Things (IoT).

The Chinese giant has been investing heavily on research and development for 5G networks, according to reports.

It invested US$8 million earlier this month in the University of Surrey in the U.K. to expand research along with other major companies such as Vodafone, Samsung and BBC.

Huawei also announced plans to work with Russian telecom company MegaFon on 5G networks which will provide coverage for the FIFA World Cup 2018 in Russia.
