Israeli-Canadian Female Fighter Denies Being Captured By ISIL

A woman with dual citizenship identified as Gill Rosenberg was reportedly captured during a battle in Kobani, Syria on Sunday between the Kurdish military and the Islamic State of Iraq in the Levant (ISIL) militants but she announced online that she was safe.

Rosenberg denied the reports on Monday that she was captured by the ISIL forces and noted that she was safe.

"Guys, I'm totally safe and secure. I don't have Internet access or any communication devices with me for my safety and security," Rosenberg said on Facebook. "Ignore the reports I've been captured."

However, it is not yet sure if Rosenberg really posted the Facebook status herself. Friends of hers has posted on her behalf on her Facebook page saying that people who are concerned about the Canadian-Israeli fighter should no longer worry as she is safe and sound.

Also, Idris Nassan, a local official in the Syrian Kurdish town of Kobani, released a statement calling the reports of Rosenberg's supposed capture a mere propaganda.

However, on Sunday, reports from the Israeli media such as Haaretz newspaper quoted a website associated with the ISIL militants that Rosenberg was held captive. Due to conflicting reports, Rosenberg's real status still cannot be confirmed.

Canadian officials then released a statement saying that they are pursuing all appropriate channels in a bid to verify Rosenberg's situation. Foreign Minister John Baird also said they still need to gather all the facts to weed out false reports.

Gill Rosenberg, 31, is a civil aviation pilot enlisted as part of an Israeli army search-and-rescue team before she was arrested back in 2009. According to YPG, the dominant fighting force of the Kurds, she is the first female foreign member of the anti-ISIL forces to reach Syria.
