Dish To Lose CBS Networking Programming Today

Satellite TV service Dish Network is about to lose CBS network programming today, if the two companies do not reach a licensing agreement.

CBS has been riled up after accepting two short-term deals with the same financial arrangement. The provider of shows like "The Good Wife", "CSI" and the Sunday National Football League wants more from the new deal, but Dish standing dormant.

The two companies have yet to reach a deal, meaning the power will go out today at 7PM local time. CBS claims Dish "is clearly not operating with the same sense of urgency" that CBS wants.

Dish currently has 14 million satellite TV subscribers and is working on other deals, like Time Warner's Turner Broadcasting. The service provider may not want to provide more to CBS.

It is not the first time CBS has threatened a network operator with removal of its service. Time Warner Cable lost 300,000 subscribers - after failing to negotiate a contract with CBS - leaving customers without the network programming for one month.

Bob Toevs, spokesperson for Dish Network, claims the company is "actively working to reach a deal before the contract expires," and says "Only CBS can force a blackout of its channels," making sure they are not in the blame when the power goes out.

Due to the law protecting CBS, nobody can reveal the contract price CBS is looking for Dish to pay, nor how much other networks pay CBS for its programming. The FCC recently tried to find Comcast's contract prices, and CBS was one of many programmers who fought against the FCC disclosing the contract prices.

Dish Network may see the contract rise as unfair against the satellite service, especially if Comcast is paying less for the same service. It is unclear if Dish will allow the network to go dark - especially with mixed growth in the past two years.

The surge in network programming prices over the last five years has been a burden on some TV networks, especially startups looking to get into the TV industry. Dish has under 24 hours to decide if CBS is worth keeping, even if it means a loss in yearly profit.
