X-Men: Days of Future Past is on its way to grab $36 million on Friday after it grossed $8.1 million on its Thursday opening night.

If the movie only has a 10% drop on Saturday and Sunday, X-Men could soar past Captain America: The Winter Soldier to become this year's biggest box office opening. The film is expected to gross at least $97 million in three days or between $117 million and $120 million in four days, according to Deadline.

Should X-Men have a higher drop this Saturday, it could nab at least $95 million or between $110 million and $114 million. As of now, the numbers remain unconfirmed but it appears to be a contender for the five highest-grossing movies for the Memorial Day weekend.

The fifth rank is currently held by The Hangover 2 with $85.9 million three-day gross and a $103.4 million four-day. One step higher is Fast and Furious 6.

Being the seventh installment in the X-Men series, Bryan Singer's movie also looks to be the second-best opener after 2006's X-Men: The Last Stand. The latter achieved $102.7 million in three-day gross on that year's Memorial Day weekend.

One thing missing with the latest X-Men sequel is an IMAX screening, which Godzilla can boast of this weekend. It is, however, being shown on 352 large format screens by some exhibitors.

According to HitFix, X-Men opened on around 2,900 screens with Godzilla as its fiercest competitor.

Singer's X-Men was unable to shoot past Godzilla's $9.3 million Thursday night gross the previous week. However, it is worth noting that the latter began screening at 7:00 pm, while X-Men started at 10:00pm.

Days of Future Past had a killer combination of rave reviews and a fantastic cast that includes Hugh Jackman, Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy, Ellen Page, Halle Berry, Patrick Stewart, Michael Fassbender, Sir Ian McKellan, and Peter Dinklage.
