Obama's Immigration Policy Blocked By House, Budget Stand-off Nears

Republican members of the House on Thursday formally voted to block U.S. President Barack Obama's immigration action but critics say this might be a risky move since the budget stand-off is next week.

The bill that was passed by Republican Representative Ted Yoho of Florida garnered 219-197 votes. The said bill states that the actions of Obama are null, void and without any legal effect.

The bill is said to be a part of the three-step plan of the House's Republican leaders to block the immigration maneuvers and at the same time approve new spending bills in order to prevent a government shutdown.

By next week, the chamber will be voting on the funding bill that will be supporting most of the government through the year 2015. Also, the budget for the Department of Homeland Security will be discussed as the Republicans want to extend it until early next year.

If and when these bills are approved, the Republicans will have more control leading to possibly blocking the immigration policies of Obama totally.

However, other conservative lawmakers are asking to start the stand-off now as the current government funding will expire on December 11. This way, they will have more leverage to defund the immigration maneuvers.

Other conservative lawmakers worry that the legislation passed by Yoho will be ineffective as it is a stand-alone bill and has only a thin chance of passing the Senate. The White House also has issued a veto threat after calling Yoho's bill non-sensical.

The bill passed by Yoho poses a higher risk of more members securing their positions and the Republicans probably did not think it would be an issue, according to some sources. However, Republicans such as House Appropriations Committee Chairman Hal Rogers of Kentucky feel that the bill will succeed in the end as he points out that he is hearing good things about it.

The Immigration executive actions of Obama will help more than five million immigrants evade deportation.
