Microsoft Hints Windows 10 Will Not Be Free

Microsoft will not divulge the price options for Windows 10 until next year, but already the idea of aly-free OS is not on the table, according to COO Kevin Turne.

Speaking at the Credit Suisse technology conference, Turne claimed Windows 10 would not be a "loss leader" when released in 2015, referring to the practice of sacrificing profits in exchange for product popularity.

Turne's comment could also be a reference to Windows 8's low starting price point, seen as a loss leader for the amount of research and development to make the new OS update possible.

Plenty of reports claim Microsoft will drop the price of Windows 10 significantly or even eliminate the price altogether. The move would be made to bring back Windows popularity and compete with Apple's free Mac OS X updates.

The Windows 10 update may be free for some users, as other reports have suggested. Windows 8 users might be complemented with early or cheap update deals.

Considering the recent large investment in free cloud storage - Office 365 subscribers getting free unlimited OneDrive storage - looked to be an opening for more free software and services.

The $199 bundle offer - containing free Skype Ultimate Talk, Office 365, Xbox Live Gold and Xbox Live Music - could also include Windows 10 in the future.

Microsoft will likely not offer Windows 10 in a one-payment option, but through monthly or yearly payments. OEM partners will reportedly be able to port Windows 10 without licensing the software, for the first time.

It is still unclear what Microsoft plans to do, but they will not reveal anything until 2015. A larger consumer event for Windows 10 will happen in late January, where Microsoft should shed some light on new features and price.
