Blackphone Launches Privacy Focused Apps Store

(Photo : Reuters) Blackphone has announced they will create a new privacy focused apps store, with a more intense vetting process.

The Google Play store may have more apps than iOS, but the amount of vetting done by Google on new apps coming to Android is rather disappointing.

This has lead to various malware incidents on Android, where the user downloads a fake or third-party app, incapable of securing the user's data from prying eyes. In an effort to make sure every app downloaded is legitimate, Blackphone will be a privacy focused apps store for users, vetting apps before they arrive on the store.

Blackphone is a security focused smartphone created by Spanish mobile maker Geeksphone and encryption firm Silent Circle. It was released after the revelations from NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden hit the news.

Blackphone CEO Tony Weir-Jones claims the new apps store will take the "Apple model" when it comes to vetting apps. Apple has a lot more tools for detecting malware and other malicious content shipped on the back-end of the app.

The app store may be more privacy focused than Apple, which currently lets freemium and social apps onto the store without much oversight. Blackphone may block any app storing data from the user onto their own servers, although this would be an extreme.

Apps that ask for unusual features, like a social app wanting to use the front-facing camera or microphone, will be questioned before accepted. Facebook Messenger reportedly had a laundry list of wanted access before installing, raising questions about the information Facebook were gathering.

Blackphone has been actively updating the smartphone to become a more relevant security tool. Even though initial sales have not been released by Geeksphone, it is clear the company wants to continue development into 2015.

The new app store will launch in January 2015.
