"Cam Newton is in fair condition and undergoing tests at Carolinas Medical Center and will remain there overnight for observation," the Panthers said in a statement they recently released.

The transverse process is the small bone that sticks out of either side of the vertebrae of the spine.

Newton's current injury is similar to Dallas Cowboys quarterback, Tony Romo's, own injury.

Romo missed one game with the injury early in the season. Afterwards, he was able to return to the action.

The Charlotte Observer reported that Newton will likely miss the Panthers' game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police spokesman Robert Tufano said Newton was driving a truck in the accident. It left debris scattered all over the street. The roof of the truck was caved in and another car appeared to be involved in the crash, also had front end damage.

The accident left Newton's car overturned in the wreck. He was loaded onto an ambulance, but not before he argued with police and medics about it as he did not want to be transported that way.

The police were investigating how the crash took place on a bridge that crosses busy I-277 in the shadow of Bank of America Stadium. This is the same stadium where the Panthers play.

Tony Douglas, witness to the accident, told The Observer that as he was walking on Church Street toward the Transportation Center, he saw a Buick sedan and a Dodge Truck collide.

The truck flipped several times and reste on its passenger side.

He noted that Newton was alert and was in pain.
