HP Working on 'The Machine' Supercomputer, 'Revolutionary' Operating System

(Photo : Reuters) Hewlett Packard has announced it is working on a new computer called "The Machine" and a new platform called Carbon OS.
Hewlett Packard has been less innovative over the past decade as customers move from personal computers to mobile devices. Similar to Intel, HP did not manage to hit the mobile market early and lost its hold on the PC market to Lenovo two years ago.
But at HP Labs-the company's future projects unit-a new operating system and supercomputer is being created. Named "The Machine," HP has been working on the computer for the past two years and the technology inside for five years.

The Machine is set to be the first computer to utilize HP's Memristor technology. Memristor will reportedly merge RAM and solid-state storage together, allowing for much faster computer speeds.
HP has been working on Memristor for five years. It should allow almost 10 times the speed for certain tasks. HP claims The Machine will be more energy efficient, size efficient and should work well for server tasks.
Google and Facebook should be prime candidates for The Machine demographic. The two companies are always looking for better server arrangement and The Machine should supply this, alongside being so much more powerful.
The current interest in HP Labs is making The Machine a server computer, but in 2016 HP will rollout a new operating system to run on The Machine, named Carbon OS.
Carbon OS is still relatively secret, while we know its name HP will only state it is "revolutionary", without actually digging into details about why it would be better than Linux, Windows or Mac OS X.
Having a full OS just for The Machine points to a consumer launch in 2016. Even though personal computer shipments have been down year-on-year since 2010, there is still millions of customers buying computers and price-per-customer has increased for PCs.
If The Machine has amazing performance, it could be the new computer for gamers (who take up a good portion of the consumer PC demographic) and enterprise.
Memristor looks to be the next evolution of memory and if HP can nail the execution, it could be a whole new business for HP in the next 10 years - especially if they can make a mobile version of the combined storage.
