Pakistani Family Massacred By Mother's Relatives Seeking Vengeance After 28 Years

A Pakistani family has been massacred after the relatives of a 60-year-old woman axed them to death including the husband and three of the children in an effort to seek vengeance when the couple got married 28 years ago.

The reports have been confirmed on Wednesday by the police officials. According to the details, the dead children were two girls and one son. One of the daughters, who was 18 years old, survived the attack but was badly wounded. The family was attacked in their home located in the central Pakistani city of Jhang.

The 18-year-old girl has confirmed that her family was killed by members of her mother's family. According to Muhammad Aslam, a policeman from Athara Hazari Police Station located in Jhang, the attack was prompted by her mother remarrying her beloved cousin 28 years ago.

Reportedly, there were four members of her mother's family that arrived in their home coming from the capital of Islamabad. They were armed with daggers and axes and those were the weapons they used to kill the family.

"She told us, 'We all tried to save each other but could not because they were armed,'" Aslam relayed.

It was not yet immediately clear why the woman's relatives waited for 18 years before attacking the family.

A possible angle being taken into consideration is the honor killing where a woman can be killed due to a social transgression. This has happened quite often in Pakistan.

These cases are not always investigated and the killers are not prosecuted because the law says that the woman's next of kin can forgive the killers. However, most often than not, the next of kin are actually the killers.

Women in Pakistan can be killed due to reasons such as looking out a window, wearing trousers, marrying the man they love or even singing. As of 2013, there have been 869 recorded cases of honor killings but according to the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, the number might be much highers since a lot of cases are not reported.
