Thailand's Princess Srirasmi decided to renounce her royal title, terminating her right to be the next queen in line in this Southeast Asian country.
The reason behind her said pronouncement is still uncertain, but the news broke out two weeks after some of the members of her family were detained due to their involvement in a controversial high-profile corruption aspersion.

According to a statement released by the Royal Gazette on Friday, the Princess who is also known as the third wife of Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn has asked for consent on giving up her title. The country's King Bhumibol Adulyadej, 87, granted her entreaty.
Thailand has very rigid laws when it comes to their lese majeste, as the punishment could reach up to 15 years of imprisonment if anyone was found guilty of slandering the monarchy. This rule has so far kept both local and international members of the press from disclosing complete information regarding that matter.
Srirasmi's has been married to Prince Vajiralongkorn since 2001 but there are speculations about an impending divorce. Althought there are currently no confirmations about it, the dismissal of the royal title could indicate that the two have finally split up.
They have a son who is nine years of age, who is a potential king since his father is the current incumbent heir to the throne.
Meanwhile, Vajiralongkorn requested the government in November to remove royally issued last names of some members of Srirasmi's family, including her uncle, for being involved in a corruption scandal. Those involved are being charged for different crimes like bribery, extortion and using the King's name for their personal advantage.
All these news came at the wrong time for the country's monarchy since their King is currently suffering from his poor health. Bhumibol recently celebrated his birthday on December 5, but he did not make a public appearance.
