Twitter, Foursquare Partner to Provide Location-Based Tweets

Twitter and Foursquare have partnered to offer better location-based tweets, alongside tapping into Foursquare's extensive location analytics API.

Even though Twitter has become the place to report on news stories worldwide, it has never offered an optimal location feature for users and advertisers. Foursquare will allow users to see location-based tweets for advertising, potentially allowing local businesses to get more bang for their buck when advertising a service or store.

Location based advertising sells a lot better than random advertising, and works with local companies. It also allows deals to be offered through Twitter at a local store, something that cannot be achieved with random ads. The partnership will launch on New Year and Twitter will begin with some lighthearted location tweets and opening up location services for users.

Foursquare itself has recently undergone major change, splitting the location app into two separate apps, one (Foursquare) about discovery, the other (Swarm) focused on sign-ins.

The two apps take in around $20 to $35 million in revenue annually, a lot less than most social networks. For all Foursquare has invested in location-based technology, it looks like it is making more money through partnerships than its own service.

Twitter needs a revenue spike as well, after the stock dropped from a high $65 to between $30 and $40 for most of the year. Twitter has faced various issues, not least getting overtaken by Facebook's photo sharing service Instagram in overall active users.

Even with the slow down on new signups, Twitter still is a crucial part of information and updates, something Facebook has been trying to bridge into, with little success.
