Facebook Interested In Creating A Dislike Button

Facebook is considering adding a dislike button to the social media site after users have pleaded for one to be created. CEO Mark Zuckerberg said "we're thinking about it" and is looking into ways to make the dislike button not just a tool for negativity.

In a 50-second video at "Townhall Q&A", Zuckerberg said there should be different ways to express sentiment toward a status. If someone is sad, perhaps like is not the best way to interact with the update.

Like Us on Facebook

"A lot of times people share things on Facebook that are sad moments in their lives or are tough, cultural or social things and often people tell us that they don't feel comfortable pressing 'like' because 'like' isn't the appropriate sentiment when someone lost a loved one or is talking of a very difficult issue,"

"And I think giving people the power to do that in more ways with more emotions would be more powerful. But we need to figure out the right way to do it so that it ends up being a force for good and not a force for bad and demeaning the post that people are putting out there." he said.

Having a two-way street would be valuable towards discussion. Reddit has already shown having a way to upvote and downvote a post or comment is an easy way to remove spam and bad comments, while keeping the good at the top.

Facebook Pages do not work like subreddits, but in many ways they could, if they had a way to downvote comments. All too often the same photo or comment is posted on a community forum, and no one is able to dislike it and remove it from the top of the comments.

Social networks have never embraced various sentiments, instead choosing one and sticking to it. On Instagram, it is a love heart, same on Pinterest; on Twitter it is a retweet or favorite.

It is unclear when or if this new flurry of sentiments will be available any time soon. Zuckerberg gives us little to go on and it is clear there are more important things being worked on at the moment.
