Facebook Teen Popularity Dwindles, Instagram Grows

Facebook is not attracting the same demographic it did when a select bunch of universities could access it, almost ten years ago.
Moving from the trendy social network to the network for parents, as it is seen nowadays, Facebook is starting to lose a lot of teenager interest year-on-year.

Facebook is not losing active monthly users, however the demographic it is drawing in tends to be less sellable to advertisers, alongside not being as active on the site.
While the parent starts to become less interesting, Instagram is now the hottest thing on the block, with 300 million active users and the fastest growing user base of any social network.
Instagram also has a great grip on the teenage audience, addicted to taking square photos and using filters. It fits in with Snapchat, Tumblr and Facebook's other subsidiary WhatsApp.
Technically, teenagers are not leaving Facebook's grasp, they are just moving to another Facebook owned entity. This is not necessarily a bad thing, especially since Facebook still has 1.3 billion users-double the amount of the second largest social network.
Facebook has become a lot less friendly to teenagers. In polls, some cite security and privacy as the main reasons for moving away from Facebook, alongside the mass amount of information needed to make an active profile.
Instagram and WhatsApp need a lot less information from the user, but in return deliver much less revenue than Facebook. This might bring a more appealing teenage audience, but the challenge is keeping these users on, while more advertisers partner with the service.
Facebook should not feel an obligation to keep teenagers active on the service, and may be able to use the older demographic for new features like Facebook for Work.
Meanwhile, the revenue churning social network can pick up any new startup looking to cash out, with a young demographic and a few hundred million users.
