Apple Pay Coming To UK In Early 2015

Apple Pay is currently only available in the U.S., but large expansion is coming in 2015. The UK is a prime candidate for the first rollout, however one major bank is stepping in the way.

The Telegraph is reporting at least one major UK bank is "uncomfortable with the amount of personal and financial information Apple wants to collect about its customers."

The mobile payment service works similar to most others, but Apple wants to utilize more customer information, to make transactions online and in-store easier.

At the launch in September, head of services Eddy Cue did say "Apple doesn't know what you bought, where you bought it, or how much you paid for it. The transaction is between you, the merchant, and your bank."

Apple's CEO Tim Cook also responded to claims it was collecting too much information, stating it was not in the business of collecting information, a statement that irked Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

The reassurances are apparently not good enough for some providers, who also see Apple Pay as a threat to banking revenues. Apple currently takes a small percentage of each sale through the payment service, but in a few years, banks think Apple could ask for a higher cut.

The UK is quite forward thinking when it comes to contactless payment, offering more terminals than the US per capita. However, banks do not seem to want to deal with Apple.

This could make it harder for Apple Pay to move into Europe, considering the UK's advanced position on contactless payment. Apple, like Google, is also having trouble with regulators, especially when it comes to funnelling tax away from the UK.
