iPhone and iPad Make Up Half Device Activations At Christmas

(Photo : Reuters) Apple products accounted for over half all device activations on Christmas, showing the dominance of iDevices in the holiday season.

Apple is still the king of Christmas electronics, activating 51 percent of all electronic devices on Christmas Day, according to mobile analytics firm Flurry.

The news comes as little surprise, given the huge sales numbers of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus over the past month. Apple has always been a favorite for gift ideas as well, even with the high prices for iDevices and Macs.

What is a surprise is the amount of Microsoft Lumia devices activated on Christmas, 5.8 percent, higher than most would have expected. This puts Microsoft ahead of Sony, LG and HTC when it comes to phones and tablets.

Samsung remains second at 18 percent of Christmas gifts, a poor showing for Samsung, considering it sold twice as many devices in 2013 than Apple.

Apple reportedly sold 67 million iPhone 6 and 6 Plus units in the holiday quarter, alongside another 5-10 million iPads. These numbers are massive, larger than all of Samsung's phone and tablets sales.

Flurry only grabs data from U.S. activations however, meaning Samsung, Sony and LG may have performed better in Asia and Europe.

iPads have been the subject of debate for most of 2014, after reports said Apple had four straight quarters of decline in the tablet market. Even though iPads are still a great gift for Christmas, it looks like more people have been buying the last-generation tablets.

For all those people getting a new iPhone or iPad, Apple will not be running its 12 Days of Christmas free app giveaway this year, for the first time since 2008.
