It's happening so often, it's become a bloody American ritual that looks like it will never stop.
A violent gun crime, this time at a high school in Oregon, took the life of a student and another man police said was the shooter.
The killings took place just after 8 am at Reynolds High School in Troutdale, 16 miles east of Portland. It came a day before the end of the school year this Wednesday.

Troutdale Police Chief Scott Anderson said law enforcement officials had tentatively identified the shooter, but were not confident enough to release a name or whether he was a student at the high school. The person killed in the shooting was identified as Emilio Hoffman, 14, a freshman.
The Associated Press, however, said the gunman was a student at the school. The gunman was later found dead in a bathroom stall, after having apparently killed himself. A Reynolds school teacher was grazed by a bullet in the hip while teaching a weight lifting class.
"Today is a very tragic day for Troutdale and the Reynolds school district," said Anderson. "I'm very, very sorry for the family and the students and everybody who will be impacted by this tragic incident."
It is the second deadly high-profile shooting since June 7 when two white supremacists killed two policemen and an armed bystander in Las Vegas. The shooters, Jerad Miller and his wife, Amanda, later committed suicide.
It was the 74th school shooting since the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre in Newtown, Connecticut in December 2012. The shooter, Adam Lanza, shot to death 20 children and six adult staff members.
Since the Sandy Hook shootings, there has been an average of 1.37 school shootings for each school week, said Everytown for Gun Safety, a group fighting to end gun violence.
Including today's incident at Troutdale, 74 school shootings have taken place in the 18 months since the Newtown shooting. The average school year normally lasts 180 days, which means there have been some 270 school days of class since Newtown.
With 74 total incidents over that period, the U.S. is averaging well over one school shooting per school week.
Some 2,800 students attend Reynolds High, one of the largest in Oregon. Wednesday is the final day of the school year.
