(Photo : Withings) After years of push away from smartwatches, Swiss watch makers are starting to embrace the new technology.
Withings has announced a cheaper version of its Activité smartwatch, named the Activité Pop, at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) today.
The original Withings Activité offers a Swiss-made metal and leather design, looking like an average premium watch, but hidden inside was a few sensors to track sleep and steps.

Withings has the watch on sale for $450, a serious commitment for a smartwatch, even if it looks as nice as some high-end watches on the market.
For the more casual user, the Withings Activité Pop is available for $149.99. It still carries all of the smart functionality, but loses its premium Swiss-made design, in favor of PVD-coated metal and a silicon strap.
Dropping $300 off the buying price for a little drop in quality might be worth it for most customers, but the Withings Activité Pop doesn't offer much in the smart capabilities department.
Compared to Android Wear or the upcoming Apple Watch, the Withings Activité Pop has little to provide on the smart front. There is no display on the smartwatch, no way to read notifications or interact with the smartwatch in any way.
Customers that like the look of the Withings Activité or Activité Pop might be interested in picking up the device, otherwise the basic smart functionality is not enough to really justify the price of the smartwatch.
Withings has shown it is determined to create more devices with smart functionalities and health features, but in 2015 the company will be pushed to see if anyone is interested in less smart functionality and more design quality.
