Sony's Smart TVs Will All Run Android TV

Sony's CES 2015 has been full of announcements, unlike some of the other Asian companies taking part at the event.

One of the biggest announcements in the TV department is Sony's partnership with Google, to supply all smart TVs with the new Android TV platform. The news follows an unsuccessful partnership between Sony and Google TV a few years back, after Google TV failed to grab the attention of many major TV suppliers or consumers.

Android TV is a lot less likely to fail in the same way Google TV did, simply because it offers less features that could leave Google high and dry.

Sony announced over a dozen TVs at CES 2015 and wants to get them all to market in 2015. This might be great for Google, who needs as many eyes as possible on Android TV. It means Sony is putting all its eggs into one basket, rather than offering some smart TVs with Firefox TV, or even trying to partner with LG on its WebOS TV project or Samsung with Tizen OS.

Smart TVs are coming to almost all mid-range TVs in 2015, meaning smart platforms are necessary. It should also spur more app developers to create apps for the big-screen. Android TV features various apps already from its huge Android store, and Google wants to integrate the TV platform further into its other Android platforms.

This includes pre-loading features like Google Cast onto the Android TV, making Chromecast users not need the additional hardware to watch video from the internet.

Sony will start launching Android TV models as soon as next month, and throughout 2015 we will see more crop up. Sharp and Panasonic will also use Android TV, but Samsung and LG will use their own platforms for TV.
