(Photo : Reuters) WhatsApp is finally available on desktop, after porting to every conceivable mobile platform available.

WhatsApp keeps climbing up the rankings, following another milestone of 700 million active monthly users, a 100 million increase from August.

Cofounder of WhatsApp Jan Koum wrote a Facebook post "As humbled and excited as we are by these numbers and our continued growth, we're even more excited to keep building a great product in 2015."

Koum also noted that 30 billion messages were sent per day through WhatsApp, or 350,000 messages per second. These numbers show even clearer the vast amount of active users on the service everyday.

The numbers come as no surprise, considering WhatsApp's new found popularity in South-East Asia, one of the most mobile regions in the world.

Chinese rival Tencent has been pushing its own service, WeChat, but does not seem to be expanding at the same pace as WhatsApp. At this rate, WhatsApp could surpass Facebook's active monthly users by 2017, especially if WhatsApp becomes popular in China.

WhatsApp has been testing some new features for the service, like VoIP (voice over IP), encrypted messages and video conference. There is even rumors of a WhatsApp for business, to integrate with Facebook for Work.

Facebook has also attracted more users on its Messenger platform, with more than 500 million late last year. Facebook did force mobile users to download the application, but it seems to have been for the best, looking at the active monthly users three months on.
