In an unexpected turn of events, the United States Olympic Committee named Boston as the nation's official bid candidate for the 2024 Olympics. They beat out Los Angeles for the right.
Since the beginning, Los Angeles has always been a safe bet to bid for the 2024 Olympics.

After all, the Summer Games had been held there twice before - in 1932 and 1984 - and each event had been successful.
It was also a viable area as it had a variety of stadiums and arenas in place such as the Rose Bowl to the StubHub Center.
However, the city officials saw Los Angeles and had a feeling of "been-there, done-that."
Thus, the decision for something new is what ultimately gave Boston the nod for the candidacy to host the Olympics.
"This selection is in recognition of our city's talent, diversity and global leadership," Mayor Marty Walsh said, adding that Boston is eager to "welcome the world's greatest athletes to one of the world's greatest cities."
The Massachusetts capital has been focusing on making a more "walkable" experience as they create a technology-based Games that would make use of numerous universities and colleges in the area.
USOC chief executive Scott Blackmun said they could not be more excited about the partnership they have established with the leadership team in Boston.
If the Olympics were to come to American soil once again, Boston could put the Summer Olympics in the Northeast for the first time, placing events in a historically rich setting.
The city has several sports traditions that may add to the history of the setting such as Fenway Park's "Green Monster" and the Boston Celtics' parquet floor.
As always though, the cost of hosting the games will always be an issue for public discussion in the coming months and years.
Last winter, Russia reportedly spent an estimated US $51 billion on the 2014 Sochi Olympics.
Bid submissions are due by September with final applications required in early 2016.
