Arson Attack on German Newspaper

Two suspects were arrested after an incendiary device was lobbed at the building of newspaper Hamburger Morgenpost, German police said on Sunday.

Like many other German dailies, Morgenpost has reprinted cartoons of French satire publication Charlie Hebdo after the massacre of 12 editorial and security staff on Wednesday in Paris.

A police spokeswoman said the arson attack was carried out in the night and files were burned inside the building. Police said no one was injured in the fire, which was quickly put out.

On Thursday, the paper printed on its front-page a headline demanding that freedom must be possible along with a trio of Charlie Hebdo cartoons showing the prophet Mohammed.

Authorities arrested and questioned two young men who were found suspiciously around the area, but police said it was too soon to determine whether the attack was linked to the cartoon publication. A German police spokeswoman said there were no leads, no claim of responsibility and no evidence.

The attack was carried out at around 2:22 in the morning local time, when the building was empty. The attackers threw a stone to break a window and then threw a fire-inducing device into the offices.

A fire alarm alerted authorities to the blaze and the firefighters were able to extinguish the fire quickly. Police said burnt old issues and papers were the only damage caused by the fire. The editorial staff was able to resume work in the building.

With daily printed copies of about 91,000, the Hamburger Morgenpost is popularly known as Mopo in Hamburg.
