The series of terror attacks in Paris which left 12 cartoonists and four civilians dead ignited anti-extremist protests and drew support from all over the world but China reacted to the incident by making a commentary against the French satirical magazine.

According to reports, despite the support in different places regarding free speech, Beijing opted to mute the idea, refusing encourage such act in the country. In a commentary, the communist nation described Charlie Hebdo's action as unacceptable.

"Unfettered and unprincipled satire, humiliation and free speech are not acceptable," an excerpt from Chinese state news agency Xinhua said.

The commentary, which was posted on the website of the news agency, says all media agencies should exercise basic respect and prudence, as what the environment demands of them. Showing respect will reduce inter-culture and inter-religion miscommunications that eventually lead to distrust, it added.

Xinhua's post also pointed out that terrorists will only exploit distrust and this will fuel their reason to attack.

The media in the country is actually controlled by the Communist Party, which has recently been clamping down on journalists and dissident scholars. Earlier this week, the home and the numerous offices of media tycoon in Hong Kong was firebombed as he is known to support the on-going pro-democracy demonstrations that aim to grant Hong Kong  independence from Beijing.

The coordinated firebombs have not injured anyone and no arrests have been made, fueling the idea that freedom of speech is not encouraged in the world's most populous country.
