Texas Congressman Apologizes After Tweeting Obama, Hitler Comparison

Republican Texas Congressman Randy Weber backtracks from his harsh criticism of President Barack Obama's absence from a unity march in Paris attended by world leaders, saying a Hitler comparison may have gone overboard.

Weber has drawn flak for tweeting that Obama could not go to Paris for "right reasons" when even Adolph Hitler, after conquering France in World War II, found it important than the U.S. president to go there.

French President Francois Hollande organized the march, which attracted millions of people to pour into the streets of Paris in support of the victims of attacks on a magazine office and a store that left 17 people dead.

The congressman has softened his tone, saying it was not his intention to make light of the Holocaust. Weber said he realized that the mention of Hitler brings back trauma and pain by victims of atrocities, hate and anti-Semitism.

He was previously criticized for posting , in the middle of the 2014 State of the Union address, that he was on the House floor, waiting for the "socialistic dictator," referring to Obama, who has been feeding lies to the US.

On Monday, the White House did express regret in not sending a top official to the Paris unity, which was attended by leaders from the Middle East and Europe.

Republican Sen. Ted Cruz also scored the president's absence in the march, but with on a much calmer tone than his party mate in the House of Representatives.

In a speech before the traditionalist Heritage Foundation, Cruz asked where the president, vice president, Secretary of State and attorney general were in the march. He pointed out that the attorney was already in Paris at the time, but he decided to get on a plane and fly back home.
