Charles R. Cross is a journalist who has known the band Nirvana from its humble beginnings to success. Cross was one of the first people given a tip by radio station KXTRX about the death of Nirvana's front man. Cross was also the first journalist to be tapped in writing Kurt Cobain's biography and two more books based on the band. In celebration of the birthday of former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl, now a front man of Foo Fighters, Cross has shared five behind the scene stories about Nirvana, Huffington Post reports.

1.) Nirvana got kicked out in their own release party after throwing dip and hummus.
"The band had smuggled in a half gallon of Jim Beam, a violation of the Washington liquor law. But before any liquor inspector could bust them, mayhem erupted. When Kurt starting throwing ranch dressing at Krist (Nirvana's bassist) and a food fight ensued." Cross shares from an excerpt book about the band, Heavier Than Heaven.
Since Cross was at the release party he had described the scene vividly. He had looked out in the alley and saw the band outside their own party.
"They weren't stars then, and anyone who ruined the club was going to be kicked out. So they did." Cross told Huffington Post.
2.) Front man Kurt Cobain was poor in "band management" and added Dave Grohl without telling the previous drummer Dan Peters that he was being replaced.
"Dave got the gig because they called him up and asked him to come audition, so he did. No one told Dan it was his last show with the band until they later hired Dave. Kurt was not exactly great and confrontation or any kind of band management." Cross said, adding the second behind the scene fact for the band.
3.) Kurt Cobain was originally the most "straight edge" member of the band.
"Yes, Kurt was the most sober member of the band for at least two tours, and that's saying something. Despite his later drug addiction, for some time he was a bit of a health freak and watched what he ate, drank and didn't smoke for a time." Cross said.
From a 2008 interview with Rolling Stone, Cross also shared that Cobain didn't like anyone smoking near him, since he thought that his vocal cords were sensitive.
4.) Kurt Cobain prays to God for help, wanted to kick his heroin addiction desperately.
"In his journals there are pages and pages where he writes, Help me God kick this addiction. Its one of the few times he seemed overwhelmed enough to reach out to a deity." Cross elucidated.
5.) Kurt Cobain was evicted and lived in his car immediately after recording "Nevermind" album.
"Kurt was evicted when they were in Los Angeles making the album because they hadn't paid his rent. He came home to find his stuff on the curb and he had to sleep in his car, this after just recording an album that would sell 30 million copies." Cross said.
