Google is making changes to its augmented reality project 'Google Glass,' after more than a year selling the $1,500 Explorer Edition to beta testers around the world.

Even though Google Glass hit the internet with a bang, in the past few months questions have been raised as to when or if the augmented reality device would officially launch. Google executives have stopped wearing the glasses in public, and there have been minimal updates in the past few months, bringing even more questions from developers and pundits.

In an update, Google has pulled its Explorer Edition from sale and Google X Labs will move the project over to Nest Labs, acquired last year by Google for $3.2 billion.

Nest Labs is still seen as a separate entity from the main Google company, similar to YouTube. CEO Tony Fadell will work on the Google Glass 2.0 device, and will report directly to Google's CEO Larry Page.

Fadell is no stranger to creative new ideas, as head honcho of Nest Labs, he has been charged with making a smoke detector and thermostat interesting to a new digital audience, and was also the senior vice president of the iPod division from 2006 to 2008.

Google Glass has various issues in its current form, including being too intrusive in public. Nest will have to work on the design of the augmented reality device, alongside offering even more features and functionality.

Price is another area where Google needs to take a second look, since $1,500 is too much for the average consumer. Google co-founder and head of Google X Sergey Brin said the augmented reality device could reality for around $600, although rumors said Google was looking at a potential $200 price tag.
