(Photo : Reuters) Microsoft has announced second quarter fiscal results, showing excellent growth in hardware and cloud, but questionable Windows 8 adoption.
Microsoft today reported revenues of US$24.47 billion and an operating income of US$7.8 billion. Analysts said the results are moderate numbers for Microsoft.
The Redmond-based company has US$90 billion in cash for acquisitions and expansion, a war chest that may play a big part of Microsoft plans for the year as it pushes into consumer cloud and mobile markets more heavily. CEO Satya Nadella pushed the "bigger picture" of cloud, mobile and enterprise to investors.

Speaking about mobile, Microsoft reported its best hardware sales in the second quarter. It sold 10.5 million Lumia smartphones that added US$2.3 billion to its quarterly revenue. The average selling price of a Lumia smartphone is US$213.
Microsoft made US$1.1 billion on Surface hardware in the second quarter, thanks to strong demand for the Surface 3 Pro. The company sold 6.6 million Xbox consoles, but didn't detail the split between Xbox One and Xbox 360 sales.
Its commercial cloud business grew 114 percent year-on-year, ending the quarter with revenues of US$5.5 billion. Microsoft also reported promising results for its Azure service for enterprise, despite growing competition in the sector.
Office 365 managed to hit 9.2 million subscribers, adding US$2.2 billion in the second quarter alone. Microsoft launched Office on mobile for iPad, iPhone and Android tablets, spurring interest in the productivity suite.
Windows was the big issue for Microsoft in the second quarter, with revenues falling 13 percent on-year. Windows 8 and 8.1 haven't captured the millions of customers running XP and 7, but Microsoft has big hopes for Windows 10, currently being tested by 1.5 million 'insiders' for a late 2015 release.
Microsoft is also positive its Windows Holographic platform will be highly anticipated by the augmented reality community, keen to see the power of the HoloLens.
