Microsoft Unveils Windows Enterprise Subscription Plans

Microsoft has unveiled new subscription plans for its Windows Enterprise Edition featuring a collection of cloud services for organizations tagged on the package.

The suite will cost between US$7 and US$12 per month and will be on a per-user basis for the first time, instead of a per-device rate, which is a rather poor decision in a platform and device agnostic world.

Windows Enterprise Edition will run on a desktop or laptop and a Windows tablet with a display size smaller than 10.1 inches. Users will be able to remove licenses when changing, allowing them to stick to the two device limitations.

Add-ons to the Windows Enterprise Edition include Azure Active Directory for authentication and identification; Intune for mobile deployment and management; MPOD desktop optimization kit; OneDrive for Business and Office 365.

Microsoft will allow users to work on virtual machines and take Windows Enterprise Edition to new devices on a USB stick, allowing flexibility in the workplace.

The inclusion of VDI and 'Windows-To-Go' should be a big boon for the enterprise industry that may have invested in Mac or Chrome OS computers, but still want the Microsoft services.

Microsoft's corporate vice president, Brad Anderson said the new subscription package should make it prices and features clearer than they were before, alongside competing heavily with other solutions.

"Organizations are looking for solutions that marry management with productivity with identity," Anderson said in a statement.

New competition is keeping Microsoft alert to new changes in the enterprise space, somewhere the software giant has been investing a lot into since CEO Satya Nadella took charge of Microsoft.
