According to officials, five of the passengers of the train and the driver of a black jeep Cherokee were the casualties from the incident. In a statement, the Metropolitan Authority said the gates came down on top of the car in the intersection, causing it to be stuck in the tracks.

The driver of the car was reportedly trying to move forward and when the train struck the vehicle.

The extent of the injuries were not yet made known but the Westchester County Medical Center said they were prepared to deal with patients who came from the crash site. The fire that sparked was said to have shattered the frontrunner of the train.

Those who were injured have been taken to a rock-climbing gym near the area called "Cliffs" while waiting for an ambulance to transfer them to the hospital. Around twelve passengers were injured in the incident.

The train carried around 750 passengers and most of the casualties were caused by the fire. One of the vehicles was said to be beneath the train and that it was already crushed.

This incident comes on the heels of an electrical problem in the District of Columbia Metro train which killed one passenger and also injured dozens. According to reports, the accident filled the tunnel with smoke and the National Transportation Safety Board is still investigating the cause of the electrical problem.
