Jason Kidd's tenure as Nets head coach may be at its end after the former ten-time NBA All-Star approached the team's ownership for a promotion.

According to the New York Times, Kidd's likely exit comes from his recent bold move to approach Nets ownership with a proposal to head the team's basketball operations, a position that would have pushed him above general manager, Billy King, while retaining the head coach position. Management rebuffed and instead granted him permission to talk with the Milwaukee Bucks regarding a similar position.

Various reports say that Kidd, who signed a four-year, US$10.5 million deal with the Nets, sought for a raise in part because of the more lucrative contracts recently signed by rookie NBA coaches Derek Fisher and Steve Kerr. Derek signed a five-year, US$25 million deal with the Knicks while Warriors hired Kerr for the same contract.

It is still unclear whether the Bucks would take Kidd in. Multiple reports suggest that Kidd's apparent play with power may not land him a coaching job or an administrative position running the Bucks' basketball operations unless general managers John Hammond and Billy King come to some agreement at the negotiation table.

ESPN reported Sunday that Kidd will be Bucks' head coach "if the Brooklyn Nets agree to the Bucks' terms of a 2015 second-round draft pick in exchange for Kidd." An unnamed source tells ESPN that the Bucks initially offered a second-round pick, a negotiation chip earlier dismissed by the Nets who would take nothing short of a first-round pick.

"If the Nets agree then there will be a deal, if they don't then (the Bucks) are comfortable moving on and there will be nothing further to talk about," a source told ESPN.

Kidd had a roller-coaster first season as Brooklyn Nets' head coach, guiding the team to a 44-38 record before losing to Miami Heat in the semifinals with the sixth seed in the Eastern Conference.

Kidd demoted top assistant coach Lawrence Frank, reassigning him to strictly overseeing daily reports early in the season. On two separate disciplinary measures, Kidd was fined US$50,000 for spilling soda on the court in attempt to stop the clock during a game with the Lakers in November and another US$25,000 for publicly criticizing the officiating during his team's first-round playoff series with the Raptors. Amidst rumors of getting fired early in the season, Kidd brought the Nets to semifinals with the Heat.

Kidd was hired by Brooklyn a year ago, some months after retiring from 19 seasons with the NBA.
