Apple Working on Internet TV

Apple TV

(Photo : Apple) Apple's best friend in the TV industry just got sour over its internet TV service.

Rumors of Apple TV return every year, and every year we're disappointed when Apple announces no product or service related to television.

A new report claims this is the year for Apple TV. But instead of making an HDTV, Apple will launch an internet TV product similar to Dish Network's Sling TV.

Apple has been meeting with a wide range of broadcasters to make this possible. Talks are still in the early stages and things like pricing, advertising and timing have not been included.

One of the upsides of being Apple is a strong relationship with The Walt Disney Company and CEO Bob Iger, who is already on board with Apple's proposed internet TV service. This means ESPN, ABC and Disney channels should all be bundled.

Apple should have a range of services to compete with Sling TV, currently offering 20 TV channels (including ESPN) for $20 per month. Apple has been able to undercut regular prices before with iTunes, and has apparently done it again in the music industry with $7.99 Beats Music subscription.

It might not come any time this year, unless Apple needs a big announcement in the second half of 2015. It's good to hear Apple is finally trying something in TV after over five years of rumors.

Steve Jobs originally said in his biography that he'd like to do something in TV, but failed to mention the exact details before his death. This has left a thundercloud of rumors hanging over Apple ever since.
