Russia Warns of 'Colossal Damage' if U.S. Arms Ukraine

(Photo : Reuters) The Kremlin has warned U.S. arming Ukraine fighters would bring "colossal damage" to the two nations.
Russia warned the United States against arming the Ukrainian army, claiming it would bring "colossal damage" between the two Cold War enemies.
The comment comes after the U.S. and Europe contemplated more support to Ukraine, to defend against the current pro-Russian insurgency happening in the South-East of Ukraine.

"Without a doubt, if such a decision is realised, it will cause colossal damage to US-Russian relations, especially if the residents of Donbass (Donetsk and Lugansk regions) start to be killed by American weapons," foreign ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said.
"This would not only threaten to escalate the situation in the southeast of Ukraine, but threatens the security of Russia, whose territory has been repeatedly shelled from Ukraine," he added.
More than 5,000 people have been killed in Ukraine since the start of the civil war. The West claims Russia promoted the violence by supplying the pro-Russian parties and starting the pro-Russian parties in Donetsk and Lugansk.
Ukraine is starting to lose some of the areas it previously had control over in Donetsk, leading U.S. and European officials to look into further support for the government.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President François Hollande flew to Russia for peace talks, even though the Russian government denies involvement in the Ukraine civil war.
If peace cannot be found, it may lead more European leaders to offer military support to the Ukrainian government. Russia is already being hit with sanctions after the annexation of Crimea, and may face more if it does not support the Ukrainian government.
