China's netizens may have a hard time accessing websites abroad, they do enjoy what little filters in from the outside, especially watching American celebrities who have captured the hearts of the rest of the world.

These U.S. singers and actors are so popular online, they have Chinese aliases which show great fondness for them.

First up is Nicki "Numbing-Spicy Chicken" Minaj, popularly known as "ma la ji." She got her moniker from tongue-numbing, extra-spicy Sichuan dishes. Her fans in China compare her to a super hot dish that overwhelms the senses and leaves them panting for more.

Next up is Benedict "Curly Blessing" Cumberbatch, also known as "juan fu." The Brit actor's wavy hair in the hit TV series Sherlock Holmes got him "juan," which means curly in Mandarin. The second name, "fu", means blessing, fortune or happiness -- and at the same time the first part of the Chinese name for Sherlock. With the two words combined -- "Curly Sherlock" or "Curly Blessing."

Mariah "Cow Sister" Carey, or "niu jie," may seem an insulting alias but that is far from the case. In China's street language, "niubi" that literally means "cow's vagina" is, in fact, a compliment because it came to mean "really awesome." So "cow sister" is a tribute to the diva's singing chops. Carey may have also gotten her pet name from a Sesame Street episode 23 years ago that showed a singing bovine puppet named Mariah Cowey.

Across the Taiwan straits, Leonardo "Pikachu" DiCaprio became popular after a news presenter kept saying Leonardo "Pikachu" in a broadcast 4 years ago. The name caught on, and to this day, Taiwanese and Hong Kong media still call the actor by his Pokemon-inspired alias.

Katy "Fruit Sister" Perry or "shui guo jie," got her nickname for obvious reasons - she tends to wear a lot of colorful fruity clothes such as watermelon-cup bras, inflatable strawberries and banana props.

Then there is "Flirty Adam" Levine or "sao dang." Sao, which does mean "flirty," can also refer to being shallow or silly. Chinese fans are smitten with Levine's one-of-a-kind, "sexy" voice and pictures of him shirtless helped give him the alias.

Jennifer "Lord of Butt" Lopez is also a buzz on Chinese social media. She is popularly known as "luo ba," which translates to her moniker. It's also a play on words as "luo ba" resembles J-Lo's family name in Chinese, "Luo pei zi."

Finally, there is the singer simply known as "Boss" or "lao ban" -- Justin Timberlake. It's a tribute to the business empire that Timberlake built, from record labels to clothing lines and tech enterprises.
