Indiana Students Tied With Sticky Tape as Penalty; Parents Irked

Parents at an Indianapolis elementary school cried foul over a Spanish class teacher, who allegedly tied her students with adhesive tape as punishment.

Parents said the "taping" incident took place just after lunch on Friday afternoon last week at William Penn School 49, on the west side of Indianapolis.

One anonymous parent said her daughter, who got her ankles taped together, was afraid to ask her teacher to go to the toilet.

The mother said her child, who is in third grade, told her all about it when she came home, adding several other students were also tied with tape to keep them from wiggling around.

Another mother, Ann Marie Havens, said her son was taped to several places.

Her child's shoes were fastened to the floor while his arms were taped to his side.

She was told other students had a ruler stuck to their back while the ankles of another girl were bound.

But the worst part, parents said, was that the teacher was taking photographs of the students while mocking them.

A mother said she was so offended by the whole situation. She is considering filing a police report.

On Monday afternoon, Indianapolis Public Schools said school administrators are looking into reports about a classroom activity involving tape.

Officials denied the activity is connected to any classroom disciplinary action.

The principal is in touch with the guardians and parents of each student in the class to make sure any matter is quickly dealt with.

A school district spokesperson said the parents' meetings with the principal were ongoing on Monday and would go on throughout the week.
