Google Shuts Down Professional Helpouts Service

Google has announced the end of Helpouts after a year and half of availability in the U.S. and most of Europe.

Helpouts was made to offer tutorials, lessons and coaching through video chat, utilizing Google Wallet to pay for the lessons.

It also offered a familiar video platform using Hangouts. It pushed all of the Google goodness inside an educational and professional platform. It didn't maintain its popularity, however.

After a week of availability on the web, iOS and Android, Helpouts dropped out of the top 100 most viewed applications on all three platforms. It has since dropped out of the top 1500.

Google had issues winning over the E.U. to its new helper platform, as well, meaning professionals had to work for free in most countries to be accepted onto the program.

Apart from being severely limiting, Google's Helpouts just wasn't that popular due to lack of advertising, lack of professionals and lack of general need for a tutor online.

Professional work online is a growing industry. Tutoring, however, is still in its early stages and there are other places already attracting a crowd. There are also websites that have one or two online courses attached to a certain subject, removing the need to shop around for the right tutor.

Google has not detailed if it will launch a new Helpouts or something to help people learn online. With its recent disasters like Google+, Helpouts and Wallet, Google is starting to look awkward for a dominant online services giant.
