In an extensive feature by The New Yorker, Apple's lead designer Jony Ive spoke on many things, including the culture at Apple, the Apple Watch, design values and cars.

While a passenger in Ive's Bentley Mulsanne, journalist Ian Parker spoke on the subject of cars.

"There are some shocking cars on the road," Ive declared. "One person's car is another person's scenery."

Ive singled out a Toyota Echo before calling the design "baffling". He didn't further the conversation as to what Apple would do if it entered the automotive industry, but it's a sign Apple is unhappy with the current state of car design.

Apple relishes the idea it's one of the few companies that truly understand design and a complete product. Before Steve Jobs' death in 2011, the CEO claimed nobody knew how to offer a complete TV experience, but Apple would champion a new innovation.

This innovation didn't come to pass due to complications with the TV industry, leading Apple to drop the secretive TV project. A internet TV project is reportedly in the works and it's similar to Dish Network's Sling TV service.

Apple is also reportedly working on some type of electric car, potentially utilizing self-driving technology in-house or from its staunch rival Google. The automotive team is around 1,000 employees strong, a huge number for one project.

It is not clear if Ive is heading the design for the car, considering this is a different beast than the Apple Watch or iPhone. Ive has shown an interest in car design however, so it's likely he has some say on the final design.

Apple has been hiring employees from Tesla, General Motors and Ford for years now, stepping into executive and secret roles in the company.

There are also rumors Apple might spend some of its $178 billion on Tesla Motors, giving them a car brand already loved by millions worldwide. The launch of the Tesla X later this year could give rise to global dominance in the electric car field by Tesla.

The rumor is Apple will offer Tesla's owner Elon Musk up to $75 billion for the company, triple it's is current value. This would give Apple a simple way into the automotive industry, and would give Musk billions of capital for SpaceX.
