IS Militants Keep Assyrian Victims AT Shaddadeh

ISIS in syria on US military radar

(Photo : Reuters) Militant Islamist fighters take part in a military parade along the streets of Syria's northern Raqqa province June 30, 2014.

The militant Islamic State of Syria (IS) on Wednesday, together with its kidnapped victims, moved to the city of Shaddadeh from the province of Hassakeh, north east part of Syria.

Shaddadeh is an IS-stronghold place.

The movement was prompted when encounters occurred between the IS and the Kurdish and Christian militia elements at Khabur River of Hassakeh.

The IS brought with them at least 70 victims, who they kidnapped during their pre-dawn attack on Monday at Khabur River.

The IS militants seized at least 70 people, who were residing along Khabur River early dawn of Monday. Most of the victims, including children and women, are Assyrian Christians.

"It is a tragedy," said Younan Talia of the Assyrian Democratic Organization.

Talia added that around 33 Assyrian villages were raided and harassed by IS on Monday. The militants abducted around 300 people and many were drawn out from their sleeping beds.

From Monday's kidnapping, the situation of the hostages is still unknown.

The United Nations Security Council condemned the harassments and kidnappings. It called for the immediate release of the victims.

The U.S. and its allies are considering airstrikes on the IS stronghold area of Shaddadeh.

They, however, are careful not to hurt the victims since IS is known of utilizing their victims as human shields.

According to Assyrian Network for Human Rights in Syria Director Osama Edward, "In addition to its (IS) strategy of terrifying people, taking hostages to use as human shields to protect from coalition airstrikes is another of its goals."

The A Demand for Action, an organization that promotes the interest of Middle Eastern religious minority groups, also called for airstrikes to assist the Kurdish and Assyrians in fighting the IS.

Meanwhile, the recent kidnapping gave more fears among religious minority groups in Iraq and Syria
