Rugby superstar Jarryd Hayne, who previously played for the Parramatta Eels, will be continuing his dream of playing in the National Football League (NFL) with the San Francisco 49ers.

Initially, Hayne had already crossed the 49ers off his list of potential teams to play.

However, the Australian rugby star announced through Mercury News that the 49ers had beaten out the Seattle Seahawks and Detroit Lions.

Early rumors stated that Hayne had been spending a lot of time with the Seahawks. He also consulted with current free agent running back Reggie Bush in 2014 and was linked to possible signing with the Lions.

Afterwards, Hayne met with 49ers Head Coach Jim Tomsula in December. The uncertainty of whether former Head Coach Jim Harbaugh would leave his team was what deterred Hayne from signing.

With Harbaugh out for good though, Hayne was back in with the 49ers again.

Hayne's choice of joining the 49ers was not coincidental. Part of the push that drove the Australian there could perhaps be attributed to Tomsula's prior experience with international players

Tomsula spent several years coaching in the NFL Europe circuit, where he rose to be head coach of the Rhein Fire in 2006.

Since October, Hayne has been preparing for the switch to the NFL.

At 6 foot 2, 226 pounds, and a 40-yard dash time of 4:53, Hayne had been named player of the year in the National Rugby League.

Hayne acknowledges that the move from Rugby to NFL is not exactly a safe move. Still, he remains unfazed as he moves on to chase his long-time dream of playing in the NFL.

The deal with the 49ers guarantees Hayne US $100,000. He will compete for the position of running back or a returner.
