Google Chairman Eric Schmidt has long been the 'calm before the storm' guy sent out to do CEO Larry Page's bidding. His job normally includes meeting with foreign government commissioners and handling most of the press interviews.

This time, Schmidt has met with European Union Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager just a few weeks before a decision is to be made on antitrust complaints levied against Google regarding its search priority for services.

Several companies have complained Google heavily promotes Gmail and Google Maps on its search engine, and this is unfair to other companies looking to have a fair right to the search results without Google skewing the page.

The integration of Google services at the top of the search result, including pre-loaded maps and tickets, has made it hard for competition to win out against the search giant that owns over 80 percent of all search results in Europe.

Google counters the argument by stating it has paid over US$5 billion to European developers and created new digital businesses inside Europe over the past 10 years due to things like AdSense and Google's own search engine.

This doesn't seem to have worked on E.U. commissioners, however, and it seems likely Google will face even more investigation, potentially moving over to the Android platform.

The Russian Anti-Monopoly Administration is currently investigating Google after a complaint from local search provider Yandex claimed Google put priority on Google Search and Chrome on Android.

While the effects in Russia might not be hard hitting, in Europe, Google might be forced to pay up to 10 percent of revenue from search, coming to billions of Euros.
