Microsoft, Sony Work Together to Prevent Future DDoS Attacks

Microsoft and Sony -- heavy competitors within the gaming industry -- are usually battling it out as to who's better in the "console war."

But according to reports, the companies are now working together to prevent any future distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks.

Phil Spencer, the head of Microsoft's Xbox division, has finally spoken out for the first time about the massive DDoS attack on Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network during Christmas day leaving thousands of gamers worldwide unable to connect to servers.

While the PlayStation Network going down may seem beneficial for Microsoft, Spencer claims otherwise and mentions that the companies are now collaborating with each other to prevent more attacks.

"I don't think it's great when PSN goes down," Spencer said in an interview with GameInformer. "It doesn't help me."

"All it does is put the fear and distrust from any gamer that's out there, so I look at all of us together as this is our collective opportunity to share what we can about what we're learning and how things are growing," Spencer added.

The group responsible for the DDoS attacks is known as Lizard Squad, a collection of teenagers and young adults that essentially sends out a massive amount of fake traffic to gaming networks and causes the servers to crash for hours, sometimes longer.

The group reportedly first began targeting gaming networks "for the laughs" but later turned into to an effort to expose the limitations of Xbox Live and PSN and ultimately cause the gaming companies to upgrade its servers.

While a DDoS attack doesn't necessarily cause a security risk, it can be very frustrating for gamers that pay for the service and are interrupted from being able to play games online. With Microsoft and Sony both working with each other, it seems they're finally seeking a way to put an end to the attacks once and for all.
