(Photo : Reuters) Samsung has surpassed 20 million pre-orders according to early figures.

Samsung has received 20 million pre-orders for the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge from carriers, already surpassing the 2014 sales for the Galaxy S5.

The pre-orders aren't guaranteed sales considering all of them come from international carriers that will sell the stock to customers. Almost all of Samsung's products are sold to carriers since it doesn't have its own stores in the West.

"Samsung received some 20 million pre-orders for the S6 and S6 Edge - 15 million for the S6 and five million for the S6 Edge from mobile carriers, worldwide. This is [a new] record," said a top ranking Samsung executive at the recent Mobile World Congress.

Samsung's CEO JK Shin also revealed the response from global carriers was much better than last year, already showing positive signs of recovery from the failures in 2014.

The entry-level 32 GB Galaxy S6 will cost $699 off contact while the Galaxy S6 Edge will cost $849. This means the 128 GB S6 Edge will be available off contact for $1049, more expensive than the 128 GB iPhone 6 Plus.

Samsung needs to win in 2015 to remain relevant in the smartphone race after losing the first place spot in China and India to Xiaomi and Micromax, respectively.

It also failed to keep the number one spot worldwide, losing in overall sales to Apple. In the fourth quarter, Apple managed to sell 74.5 million devices while Samsung only managed 74.4 million, a small defeat.

The South Korean company will reportedly spend 20 percent more on advertising this year to reclaim customers lost in 2014. In the UK, its advertising budget is set at £45 million for the Galaxy S6, the largest budget in the history of UK advertising for a single product.
