Apple Poaches Dolby Exec for Music Streaming Service

(Photo : Reuters) Apple has revealed yet another excellent quarter.
Apple is ramping up hiring for its music streaming service Beats Music with an expected relaunch in the summer to coincide with the launch of an internet TV platform.
To make sure it has the best team working on Beats Music, Apple has hired Mike Rockwell, executive vice president of Dolby's advanced technology group. The pickup is sure to enhance sound quality on the service, something Jay Z's Tidal streaming service touts as best-in-class for $20 per month.

Rockwell joined Dolby in 2007 and had a range of positions inside the company. He worked on audio projects for Dolby's latest technology. He seems to have the brass to push audio performance through software rather than hardware, something Apple wants for Beats Music.
Apple poached him from his position at Dolby two months ago, around the same time it started scouting for battery experts for its secret electric car project. Samsung reportedly lost a few good engineers to Apple's high salaries and bonuses.
Oddly enough, it might not be Beats Music where Rockwell is heading but to devices and displays. Rockwell will apparently work on making audio for the iMac and MacBook better, alongside working on performance and battery life on the computers.
Rockwell's main priority is reportedly to make sure all Macs get the same top-notch "Cinema" display present on the iMac with 5K display announced last year. Having this type of display on a MacBook would be impressive but we expect that will not come until at least 2016.
Apple has always promoted its displays as best-in-class with the 'retina' display becoming a hallmark of display advancement despite not featuring the pixels some other displays on the market offer.
Having this huge concentration of talent at Apple could lead to some remarkable moves in the industry as Apple ramps up its hardware and services. It might be a "too many chefs in the kitchen" scenario but CEO Tim Cook has shown excellent delegation over the past few years to make sure all executives have responsibility and barriers.
No word on how much Rockwell gained from the move over to Apple, but battery experts are getting a 60 percent salary increase alongside a $200,000 joining bonus.
