Cynthia Lennon, John Lennon’s Ex-Wife Loses Battle to Cancer, Passes Away at 75

Cynthia Lennon, John Lennon's first wife and whose existence was once famously hidden from the first of the Beatles fans, has lost her battle with cancer and died at 75 years old.

The devastating news was announced by her son with John Lennon, Julian Lennon, who is also a musician. He posted a photo of her mother on Twitter and captioned it, "Cynthia Lennon - In Loving Memory" with a link to Cynthia's memorial webpage.

On the webpage, he shared that Cynthia passed away at her home in Mallorca Spain, after a short battle with cancer. The 51-year old Julian was beside her at the time.

On the website, it read, "The family are thankful for your prayers. Please respect their privacy at this difficult time."

After the message is a video tribute, whose lyrics are written below it, to Cynthia, who tied the knot with John Lennon on 1962. Their marriage ended on 1968. The lyrics start with, "You gave your life for me, you gave your life for love, the feeling still remains, though you're on a different plane."

Yoko Ono, John's second wife, also took to Twitter to relay her condolences. She attached a photo of her and Cynthia with their sons. She wrote, "I'm very saddened by Cynthia's death," and continued to describe Cynthia as a wonderful mother and a great person. "She had a strong zest for life and I felt proud how we two women stood firm in the Beatles family," she said before asking for support and love for Julian.

Paul McCartney posted his official message on his own website. Describing Cynthia as a "lovely lady," he said that he's known her since the Beatles' early days in Liverpool. He continued to say that she will be missed by everyone but took comfort in knowing that they had a lot of great memories together.

While Ringo Starr and his wife, Barbara sent "Peace and love to Julian" on Twitter.

Cynthia was born in 1939 and first met John during the 1950s when they were both going to the Liverpool College of Art. Though Cynthia was refined and John was aggressive, they clicked and had lots of fun together, when eventually she got pregnant.

They married in 1962 and welcomed Julian the next year.

It was then unknown that the Beatles manager, Brian Epstein, kept the marriage and the baby a secret because of the Beatles die-hard fans. However, no matter how hard Brian tried, the secret eventually came out.

It was no secret that life as a Beatle wife was hard. A lot of journalists and writers have consistently described Cynthia as short-tempered and controlling. And as if the pressures of the Beatles fans and the media weren't hard enough, she caught John cheating on her with Yoko Ono in her own home. They divorced in 1968 and went their own separate ways. John continued to date and eventually married Yoko, while she married and divorced or partnered with four more men.

She published some of her memoirs. One in 1978, called "A Twist of Lennon" which was about her marriage to John and another in 2005, a biography of John, in which she detailed Julian's relationship with his father after they got divorced and how Julian dealt with John's death on 1980.

Cynthia and Julian, who has openly said he felt abandoned by John, stayed close. Back in 2006, mother and son watched the Las Vegas premiere of Love, a Cirque du Soleil production. It was Cynthia's first public appearance with Yoko.

Cynthia is more famously known in the U.K. than in the United States. Within minutes of the announcement of her death, several obituaries were already written, one of which is The Telegraph, in which she was described as the "first real love" of John.
