Lakers Rumors: Byron Scott Urges Nick Young to Step Up Game Next Season

Los Angeles Lakers head coach Byron Scott is already advising veteran shooting guard Nick Young to spend the whole offseason honing his overall skills-set, because he might not fit in well to his plans for next season.

Scott, who is about to wrap up the worst season in Lakers' history, told ESPN during Saturday's practice the necessity of Young to step up his game and grow up if he wants to crack into his regular rotation next year. With the Lakers expected to make a hard push towards signing elite free-agents, the Lakers bench tactician stressed that Young need to put best foot forward because the competition for minutes is going to be much tougher.

"There's areas in his game that he has to improve, and if he doesn't, there's no telling what we're going to do this year in the free agent market. But if we get the guys we want then he's got a challenge next year on his hands, as far as being in that rotation and playing consistent minutes," Scott said of Young, who could miss the remainder of the season with a fractured knee.

The 29-year old Young is the best offensive weapon off the bench for the Lakers this season, averaging 13.4 points and 2.3 rebounds in 30 rebounds per game this season. However, the former USC standout is shooting just under 37 percent from the field and 37 percent from beyond the arc. His toughness, particularly on the defensive end, is also one of much criticized facets of his game, with Scott describing him as one of the sensitive athletes he has ever coached.
