The latest match included in the eminent rivalry the Red Sox finally beat the Yankees last Saturday in a total of 19 innings. The final game-ending double play took place at 2:13 in the morning.

The Red Sox were initially leading the game. However, they gave up their leads in the 9th, 16th and 18th innings.

The opportune moment to win came though when a sacrifice fly by Mookie Betts propelled the team to take the lead.

The winning run was made by Xander Bogaerts after reaching his fourth hit in the extra innings.

After the game, Red Sox manager John Farrell stated that the win was a testament to the will and resiliency of the team.

The official time of the game was clocked in at only 6 hours and 49 minutes. However, due to a power outage in the 12th inning, the total time for the game was more than 7 hours all in all.

Apart from the total number of innings, Chase Headley and Mark Teixeira had their birthdays when the clock struck 12. As a means of celebration, Headley and Teixeira both scored homeruns for the Yankees, tying them with the Red Sox.

The end of the game gave both teams much deserved rest until they meet again for the middle game of their series on Saturday, 1:05 p.m.

The game stands as the longest game Red Sox history, while it is only the second longest in Yankees history since their 22 inning victory over Detroit way back in 1962.
