Activision has announced the second expansion to its shared-world shooter Destiny called House of Wolves. It involves the Queen of the Reef's attempt to destroy the Fallen that betrayed the Awoken, after the Awoken offered the Fallen a place on the Reef.

Destiny has not been the major success Activision and Bungie were banking on it becoming. The Call of Duty publisher invested $500 million into the video game for a 10 year life cycle, but it looks like Destiny is running out of steam in under a year.

The Dark Below -- Destiny's first expansion -- didn't offer a lot to relieve the dropping playerbase. Many reviewers criticized the lack of depth in the DLC, alongside random loot drops making hour long grinds not feel worth it.

Bungie clams House of Wolves won't have as much grinding and should offer more unique loot unavailable at game vendor stores. This should make the whole experience a lot more satisfying after several hours of playing, if anyone decides to play it.

Even though we can't track the active player base on Destiny considering the complete lack of excitement on boards and forums about the game, it seems to be either quite dead or quite boring -- probably both.

The issue with Destiny was a lot of the grinding felt worthless and the combat was basic. There wasn't much variety to enemies, the dialogue left much to be desired and even in a shared-world you felt alone, a rather different experience to something like World of Warcraft where friends are made almost naturally.

This type of rift between the players and the developers wasn't closed in the past year, with Bungie still trying to fix some of the flaws in the game. Having Destiny on PS4 and Xbox One only has severely lowered the playerbase willing to spend hundreds of hours grinding through different raids and missions.

Bungie and Activision have both hinted at a PC expansion, but at this rate we might not see that launch until late 2015, if ever.

There is worry the collapse of the playerbase for Destiny could result in Activision pulling the plug on the whole operation. This would force Bungie to start work on a new video game or look for new funding routes.
