AT&T Planning GigaPower Launch in Atlanta, Following Google Fiber's Move Into City

(Photo : Reuters) AT&T GigaPower is coming to four communities in Atlanta.

Atlanta is the hottest city in the U.S. when it comes to broadband speeds. Google Fiber announced it was coming to the city earlier this year, followed by Comcast doubling the speed with 2Gbps and now AT&T GigaPower coming later this year.

Considering most cities are lucky to get two providers, having three is a luxury. AT&T GigaPower will be available at $90 per month for 100Mbps or $120 per month for 1Gbps.

GigaPower will be available in four sites in and around Atlanta, including central Atlanta, Sandy Springs, Decatur and Newnan. It's similar to Google's plans for Atlanta, although Google hasn't revealed first neighborhoods.

This isn't the first time AT&T has moved into a region where Google Fiber is active or coming soon. In 2014, it announced GigaPower was coming to Austin, Texas a few months after Google Fiber announced the move to the city.

The GigaPower service has been criticized in Austin for only being available in high-end developments. It has caused some residents to call AT&T's service cherry picking for customers with enough money but the company refutes those allegations.

Similar complaints have been outed at Google Fiber that tends to pick neighborhoods based on "popularity", although these also seem to be the places with the highest household income in the city or the highest average broadband owners.

Even though some may claim this is too little too late, Google Fiber's whole plan was to create competition and promote high-speed internet. Comcast, TWC, AT&T and Verizon may have all laughed that off in 2012, but now we're seeing real progress by most of the broadband providers.

Though it might not create any customer loyalty, it's at least good to have options when it comes to choosing a broadband service instead of having one fiber and one DSL option in a whole state.
