The school eventually called the authorities to investigate a potential case of child abuse, thus leading to Elaine's arrest.
Elaine's depression grew worse over the years and she resorted to drinking alcohol to alleviate her condition.
Elaine was separated with her daughter for almost three weeks following her arrest.
Etta was put under the care of her godmother and she apologized to her mother for causing trouble on her part. Elaine verbalized her plan to change her ways and drink less, so that Etta's trust in her will be restored.
Etta finally returned home in Tai Po in the first week of April. Elaine, who missed her daughter during their separation, was happy to see Etta again.
Though Elaine stated that she still has a long way to go when it comes to improving mother-daughter relationship.
"We are taking things slow. I'm still learning how to do so. Learning is really a lifelong process," said Elaine.
Elaine tries her best to reflect on her previous shortcomings to serve as a reminder for a need to change her behavior.
She promised Etta that she will try her best to reduce her intake of alcohol. Elaine also requested Etta to avoid observing her every move in the house since it makes her feel comfortable.
She told her daughter about the importance of mutual trust and how it can create a harmonious relationship between family members.
Elaine proposed an idea for Etta that they will try to look out for each other. While Etta is returned to her mother back home, it is still uncertain if the child abuse charges against Elaine will be dropped or will push through.
Elaine, in response, told the media that her legal representative will handle the case and refused the provide any further detail.
