Apple Preparing 20 Million Apple Watch Sales in 2015

(Photo : Reuters) Apple has a target of 20 million Apple Watch sales before the end of 2015.

Apple hasn't released sales figures for the Apple Watch first two weeks on pre-order but analyst's projections range from sales of 1.5 to 3 million.

It looks like Apple expects momentum to continue throughout the year with orders of two million units per month for the next 12 months.

Apple analysts expect anywhere between 10 and 26 million sales within the next year and potentially much more if Apple launches new models and straps within the year as some rumors suggest.

Currently, the Apple Watch is almost universally out of stock. The wait time is two months or until June, but several options are backlogged until July. Reports from the supply chain seem to suggest LG Display is the main contributor to the delay with a lack of screen units and yield rate issues.

Compared to Apple's iPhone line that sold 74 million units last quarter, the Apple Watch is still a secondary market for the company even if it has the highest profit margins of any Apple product ever.

It will overtake the iPad in the secondary category and may even overtake the Mac, making it Apple's second largest product line behind the iPhone.

The issue with the Apple Watch is unlike the Mac and iPad, which have been shown to work in conjunction with the iPhone, many users assume the Watch is a replacement for the iPhone.

Apple doesn't want that to be the case, but going forward we may see the Apple Watch become a more autonomous device without having to be shackled to the iPhone at every point in order to function.

Google already released a Wi-Fi update for Android Wear smartwatches allowing them to work without having the phone in Bluetooth range. We expect the Apple Watch will get that same update soon.

The Apple Watch officially launched yesterday with crowds in nine countries scouring shopping malls for suppliers. Apple's own stores will not supply any Apple Watch units until June but in places like Dover Street Market in London and Tokyo, a small supply for units are available for purchase.
