Wu Ashun has become the first Chinese golfer to clinch a European title on home soil by winning the latest Volvo China Open.

Going into the final round of the Volvo China Open, two golfers from China were tied for the lead. With how it was going, it was inevitable that China would have its first golfer to win a European title.

All eyes gravitated to 19-year old Li Haotong, who people tout as a talented golfer who will become China's golf star for many more years to come. However, it was Wu who took the title.

Wu, 30, recently took six months off to rebuild his swing. Prior to that, he had never finished in the top 10 on a tour. It seems his time off did wonders as he was able to take home trophy.

Wu's performance proved to be steadier than his younger counterpart. His final round was full of momentum swings that entertained the crowd in Shanghai.

He finished up with a final round of 71 and secured a one-stroke victory over David Howell on Sunday. Wu finished at 9-under 279 overall.

Commenting on his performance, Wu said that he tried his best to play every shot well. Simple golf is what he played, he said.

Apart from the trophy and the distinction though, Wu brings home much more in the form of prize money. The win nets him US$543,000, the most he has ever earned in seven years of the European Tour.

Through a translator, he acknowledged that a golf career is a long journey and that patience is key to get the win.

Wu also beomes only the third Chinese player to win on the tour since Liang Wen-Chong took the Singapore Masters title in 2007.
